Instructional Need and Strategy

Throughout this course, the focus was on the instruction of ways to develop Phonemic Awareness among young children. However, before that skill is developed, a very important pre-requisite skill must be built upon as a sound reading foundation. That is, Phonological Awareness.

It is very common for educators to apply various teaching strategies without even knowing what specific strategy they are using. It is very possible also that in their basic instinct, early childhood educators have been attempting to develop these two skills, Phonological and Phonemic Awareness, seeing the need to do so as a pre-requisite to reading.

The following materials have been created to guide early childhood educators in their teaching of Phonological and Phonemic Awareness, based on the principles of Constructivism and Andragogy. Building upon their previous knowledge and experience, they will be able to easily create their own activities and integrate these in their existing classroom curriculum. These will be engaging and helpful tools in guiding their learners to reading success.
